Extending history: Civil and environmental undergrad programs remain among nation’s elite program in new U.S. News rankings

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering's undergrad civil program is No. 2 in the nation and environmental is No. 4, according to U.S. News and World Report's 2019 survey (graphic includes photo of the Ramblin' Reck).

For the third consecutive year — and the fourth in the last five — Georgia Tech’s civil engineering bachelor’s degree has been ranked No. 2 in the nation, and both undergraduate programs remain in the top four.

The annual juggling of top civil and environmental engineering programs for undergrads continued with the release of the 2019 rankings by U.S. News and World Report Sept. 10. Georgia Tech continues to jockey with the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and, in environmental engineering, Stanford University, as the elite programs in the country.

“Our continued ranking among the nation’s very best programs is a testament to the tradition of excellence embodied by our students, faculty and staff. They strive every day, year in and year out, to advance the state of the art in civil and environmental engineering and improve the human condition,” said Donald Webster, Karen and John Huff School Chair. “I’m gratified that their hard work continues to be recognized.”

Based on surveys of civil and environmental engineering programs around the country, the U.S. News lists are the most-visible rankings of engineering programs. The environmental engineering undergraduate program was No. 4, continuing a streak of top 10 rankings that extends to the program’s creation a decade ago. At No. 2, the School’s civil engineering program has been in the top five programs going back to the beginning of the century.

“These rankings — certainly not the only measure of success for our programs — also reflect our diverse and thriving alumni, whose impactful careers make a difference in their communities and demonstrate the power of a Georgia Tech civil or environmental engineering degree,” Webster said. “We’re grateful for their continued support, which helps us stay at the vanguard of engineering education.”

The School’s bachelor’s degrees joined every other undergraduate program in the College of Engineering in the top five this year. The College itself, which is ranked by peers as well as other metrics, held firm at No 4.
