The American Society of Civil Engineers Georgia Section honored master’s student Maya Goldman and Associate Professor David Scott with President’s Awards at the group’s annual banquet August 25. The group also recognized environmental engineering master’s student Annie Blissit as the Young Civil Engineer of the Year.
The President’s Awards honor special service to the Georgia ASCE — in Scott’s case, for his longstanding service to students, the industry, and the broader community. He said he was humbled to accept it.
“I have always appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with other civil engineers to better serve our profession here in the state of Georgia,” Scott said. “In particular, I have always had a very keen interest in working with the next generation of engineers; helping to foster enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and an appreciation for technical rigor in those who will advance our profession in the coming years.
“As an educator, I consider that my most important mission — and the very best part of my job.”
Georgia Section President Shaukat Syed gave out five President’s Awards this year.
“The awards recognize actions of an extraordinary and continuing nature that are outside the realm of standing ASCE awards, and which assist the President in achieving the goals established for the year,” Syed said.
Goldman expects to finish her master’s degree focused on water resources in December. She’s been active in the Georgia Tech ASCE chapter since her freshman year, including attending regional and national conferences and service on the chapter’s executive board. Earlier this year, she won the Mead Paper Competition at the regional conference.
Blissit is a part-time master’s student and water engineer at Gresham, Smith and Partners. In a news release, company Chairman and CEO Al Pramuk said the honor is well-deserved for someone who has been dedicated to ASCE and other community organizations.
“She is an exceptional young leader whose enthusiasm and involvement is apparent to everyone around her,” Pramuk said. “Not only is Annie a tremendous asset to our firm, but to her community and the industry.”
