The Atlanta chapter of WTS has awarded scholarships to three School of Civil and Environmental Engineering students for 2017. They’ll now compete against nominees from every chapter for international scholarships from the WTS Foundation.

“I’m thrilled to accept this honor and stay motivated in conducting practical research,” said Ann Li, a Ph.D. student who won the Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship. She’s studying geographic information systems applications in transportation and emissions modeling.

The Atlanta chapter of WTS (originally the Women’s Transportation Seminar) honored Li and the other scholarship winners at its annual luncheon Oct. 26. Ph.D. student Alice Grossman received the Leadership Legacy Scholarship for Graduates. Civil engineering senior Tu Nguyen won the Molitoris Leadership Scholarship for Undergraduates.

“Applying for these opportunities is important,” Nguyen said, not just for the financial help but for the networking. “I believe that making connections is crucial, as it helps with gaining new mentors and learning more about the industry.”

“What I value most about my connection with WTS Atlanta is how much their leadership and connections help me become a better mentor for the undergraduate and graduate students in my courses and my department,” said Grossman, who, along with Li, studies with Randall Guensler.

She continued: “One of the things I really admire about WTS is [its] gender inclusivity. There is always a balanced mix of accomplished women and men at the annual WTS Atlanta luncheon and at various events supporting women in our field, which is great, because we need both men and women to care about women succeeding and advancing in the field.”

The WTS Foundation scholarships go to college women who are pursuing careers in transportation. Foundation materials say winners are selected based on their “specific transportation goals, academic record and transportation-related activities or job skills.”
