Biography

Giovanni Circella joined the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering as a Research Engineer in November 2013. He currently shares his time between Georgia Tech and the University of California, Davis where he works as a part-time researcher at the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS). Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he worked for several years as a post-doc researcher at UC Davis, where he developed several research projects and was central to the transportation modeling activities of the Urban Land Use and Transportation (ULTRANS) Center.

Dr. Circella’s research interests and skills include travel behavior analysis, transportation planning, travel demand modeling, land use planning and modeling, travel survey methods, transportation sustainability, energy consumption, and policy analysis. He is an expert in the collection and analysis of behavioral data and the estimation of discrete choice models and other quantitative methodologies. His recent research activity has focused, in particular, on the impact of personal attitudes and preferences on travel choices, the relationships between land use and travel behavior, the analysis of energy consumption associated with different land use patterns, the impact of information and telecommunication technology (ICT) on mobility patterns, and the mobility of young adults (“millennials”).

Dr. Circella has been the principal investigator for several research projects, and has conducted more than $500,000 in sponsored research for a variety of funding agencies, including federal, state, and local government agencies and research foundations.

Dr. Circella is a member of the Committees on Transportation and Information Communication Technologies (ADB20), Transportation Demand Management (ABE50), and Statewide Multimodal Transportation Planning (ADA10) of the Transportation Research Board. He has authored many scientific papers, project reports and contributions to scientific conferences, and he regularly serves as a reviewer for several prestigious scientific journals. He is currently contributing to the organization of the TRB International Conference on Sustainable Transportation, to be held in May 2015 in Washington DC, as the one responsible for the conference program development. Dr. Circella is deeply involved in the activities of the National Center for Sustainable Transportation, which is based at the University of California, Davis and has Georgia Tech as an affiliated center.

Dr. Circella is a member of the panel for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) project 20-102 on the “Impacts of Connected and Automated Vehicles on State and Local Transportation Agencies”. This role matches his research interests for the analysis of the impact of connected and autonomous vehicles on travel behavior, the use of transportation infrastructures and the future modifications in lifestyles and the urban form of cities, which are topics on which he plans to develop additional research activities in future years.

Dr. Circella has been invited to give invited lectures and speeches at several American and European universities and other institutions. He speaks English, Spanish and Italian fluently, and he has been studying and working in the USA, Austria, Spain and Italy. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Italy. In addition to his contribution to scientific and professional organizations, Dr. Circella regularly cooperates with metropolitan planning organizations and non-profit organizations in the U.S. and in Europe.

Starting in October 2014, he has been elected to the Research Faculty Senate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, as the representative of the research faculty members of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
